Advocacy Program Officer – Immediate opening

Job description:  The Program Officer will contribute to all aspects of the organization’s advocacy strategy, including lobbying and policy work, casework, capacity building, and press and media work. This position is ideal for someone who is passionate about China and interested in working on a wide range of human rights issues across diverse fora and through varied approaches. Role and responsibilities:

  • Research and analyze a broad range of topics, with a focus on relevant Chinese legal and regulatory developments, technology and human rights, and the UN human rights framework
  • Produce diverse advocacy materials including: UN submissions, government briefing notes, press talking points, topical backgrounders, case summaries, legal memoranda, etc.
  • Track key issues and cases and identify relevant advocacy opportunities
  • Translate materials to or from Chinese for circulation to wider audience
  • Participate in outreach and collaboration activities
  • Participate in strategic decision making and impact tracking
  • Other related duties as assigned

Requirements for the position:

  • Native level language ability in Chinese (Mandarin) and English, Cantonese fluency a plus for Hong Kong placement
  • Degree in law, familiarity with Internet regulations and rules in China a plus
  • 3-5 years of professional experience
  • Strong legal research and analytical skills, and the ability to summarize and simplify complex information into an accessible form
  • Excellent writing ability, including the ability to recognize and adapt to different audiences
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills; flexible and with a keen ability to multitask, prioritize, and meet multiple deadlines
  • A self-manager who also works well in a team, is results-oriented and information seeking, and is known for quality work and working with integrity

Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Communications Program Officer – Immediate opening

Job description:  The Program Officer will contribute to all aspects of the organization’s advocacy strategy, including press and media work, casework, capacity building, and lobbying and policy work. This position is ideal for someone who is passionate about China and interested in working on a wide range of human rights issues across diverse fora and through varied approaches.  HRIC offers a fast-paced, multicultural, and collaborative environment with significant growth opportunities for the right person. 

Role and responsibilities:

  • Engage in regular outreach to diverse networks
  • Regularly monitor Chinese and international new and traditional media services
  • Identify and summarize key human rights cases or events in Chinese and English
  • Translate materials to or from Chinese for circulation to wider audience
  • Assist with coordination and delivery of workshops and events
  • Research and develop awareness-raising materials for diverse audiences, including: journalists, governments, UN experts, civil society groups, and human rights defenders
  • Produce, upload and manage content and updates for HRIC website
  • Other related duties as assigned

Requirements for the position:

  • Native level language ability in Chinese (Mandarin) and English; fluency in Cantonese a plus for Hong Kong placement
